Muse feat. Pharrell Williams
The title track opens the album and “gives Muse its spine”: a tumultuous relationship, sketched from the romance of Paris and high art. The name reaches back to the nine Muses of Greek mythology, who governed music, science, literature and the arts.
“We conjured a character we could write about, freely.”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026In his own words
“Oh, it’s an artist and their muse. And it’s partly about their relationship, it’s partly about the artist’s journey.”
John Legend NPR, Morning Edition, Oct 22, 2026“So it ends up feeling like it’s neither one of us specifically.”
John Legend NPR, Morning Edition, Oct 22, 2026“There was no particular, explicit person … We conjured a character we could write about, freely.”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026“We’ve both been married for over a decade. We both have four kids.”

Pray For Ya
The first taste of Muse happened on a runway: its “rollicking, gospel-tinged groove” soundtracked Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 Men’s show. John was in the room when the orchestra started playing chords he recognized, then the beat dropped. One of the first songs out of the sessions.
“I hear the orchestra playing some chords, and then I’m like, I recognize those chords.”
John Legend Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, Oct 9, 2026In his own words
“I hear the beat drop for one of the songs that are on the album … and it was epic.”

Her feat. Pharrell Williams
Pulls from the doo-wop and gospel John’s father raised him on (his dad sang and played drums; his mother directed the church choir), distilled into a tender groove about falling head over heels.
“It’s very nostalgic, very romantic. There’s a sweetness to this record. It’s a portrait of infatuation.”

How Daylight was made
Before
A Hook for Clipse
Pharrell produced every song on Clipse’s comeback album, Let God Sort Em Out. On “The Birds Don’t Sing,” John sang the hook. His voice on that record is what gave Pharrell the idea of building an album around it.
“I think he loved hearing my voice singing what he had written for that track.”

The Call
A few months later the phone rang in Los Angeles. Pharrell was calling from Paris.
“It’s like 5 am in LA and I don’t answer.”
John Legend, Roc Nation album bio“I called him after I woke up and he’s like, ‘What are you doing for your next album?’”

The Song Arrives
Pharrell sent over a song he had written with the singer and songwriter Samm Henshaw. It was called “Daylight.” The finished credits list four writers: Pharrell Williams, Samm Henshaw, Wayne Hector and John himself, credited as John Roger Stephens.

Cut at Home
John recorded it at home in Los Angeles, around Christmas. Hearing it, he knew what the album could be.

The Corner Office
The sessions moved to Paris, to the studio Pharrell keeps inside the Louis Vuitton headquarters, with more trips to come and sessions over Zoom in between.
“…getting to the corner office and there’s a piano and a music studio there.”
John Legend, NPR Morning Edition“Sometimes I would do remote sessions with them. I had my studio in L.A. and we would Zoom.”

First Light
“Daylight” became the first single from Muse, previewed the night before with a performance from Nashville. Roc Nation’s album bio calls it “the song that started it all.”

Are You Ok? feat. Pharrell Williams
A couple in conflict, trying to find what’s at the root of it. Sarcasm and “a little shit-talking,” but written to stay empathetic. Among the first songs the sessions produced.

John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026In his own words
“The song deals with a couple going through conflict in their relationship and trying to figure out how to resolve it…”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026“…even though the song is basically an argument, I still wanted it to be empathetic and emotionally intelligent.”

Bodies On The Floor feat. Clipse
John wrote the lyric with Samm Henshaw while watching the crime drama MobLand, letting its gang-war language bleed into a toxic, magnetic love story. His own reference point: “Again” and “Another Again” from his second album, Once Again. And Clipse, whose record started all this, return.
“I wanted to write songs filled with tension and friction.”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026In his own words
“Part of me was writing with literal gang wars in mind, a vicious cycle of harm and retaliation.”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026“…these two lovers hurt each other, betray each other, but there is a heat that brings them back to each other.”
John Legend Roc Nation, Oct 7, 2026“It reminds me of ‘Again’ and ‘Another Again’ from my second album Once Again.”
